The Lengthy Stroll by Slavomir Rawicz
My score: 4 of 5 stars

The Lengthy Stroll House is a non-fiction memoir about Slavomir Rawicz, as soon as a soldier within the Polish military, who was arrested by the Russians and accused of political crimes. He was tortured and despatched to Camp 303 in Siberia together with a number of thousand different captives.

Slav and 6 fellow inmates escape and trek to security hundreds of miles away crossing rivers, the Gobi desert, climbing the Himalayas and at last arriving in India. The primary version of this e book was written in 1956 with the assistance of journalist Ronald Downing. I learn a later version with an afterward penned in 1997.

This can be a very readable story and I used to be surprised on the human capabilities for survival particularly in the course of the lengthy durations of torture in jail, the weeks spent in cattle vehicles as they travelled by practice from Moscow to Siberia, and the months of strolling throughout an unlimited continent. This can be a harrowing but touching story; many instances they acquired kindness from strangers who shared their meals, shelter and information with the escapees. The memoir illustrates so effectively the depth of human resourcefulness and willpower in probably the most dire of circumstances.

Ebook Description:

In 1941, the writer and a small group of fellow prisoners escaped a Soviet labour camp. Their march out of Siberia via China, the Gobi Desert, Tibet and over the Himalayas to British India is a exceptional assertion about man’s want to be free. With a brand new afterword by the writer, and the writer’s foreword to the Polish version, this new version of “The Lengthy Stroll” is destined to outrank its traditional standing. “One of many epic treks of the human race”. Shackleton, Franklin, Amundsen …historical past is full of individuals who have crossed immense distances and survived regardless of horrific odds. None of them, nonetheless, has achieved the extraordinary feat Rawicz has recorded. He and his companions crossed a complete continent – the Siberian arctic, the Gobi desert after which the Himalayas – with nothing however an axe, a knife and per week’s value of meals.
